PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team defeated Villanova, 2-1, at the
Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex on Saturday, Oct. 11 for their first BIG EAST win of the season. Senior
Fabio Machado (Santa Catarina, Brazil) scored the game-winning goal for the Friars.
The Friars jumped out to an early, 1-0 lead after a cross from
Fabio Machado. The ball was shot into the bottom right of the net, just outside the six-yard box, by sophomore
Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) at 6:34. The goal marked Steeves' fifth goal of the season.
The wildcats responded with a Colton Bryant goal in the 40th minute. Bryant headed the ball into the net off a free kick from Max Kroschwitz. At the end of the first half, the game was tied 1-1.
In the 88
th minute of the game, senior
Markus Naglestad sent a cross inside the six-yard box which was then fired into the back of the net by Machado for the game-winning goal. The goal marked Machado's third goal of the season.
After 90 minutes of play, Providence held the advantage in shots (22-12) and corner kicks (5-2).
With the win, the Friars advance to a 6-2-1 (1-0-1 BIG EAST) record, while the Wildcats drop to 6-5-1 (1-2-0 BIG EAST).
The Friars will return to action for a 3:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, Oct. 15 when they take on the Hoyas in Washington, D.C.
