Field Hockey Falls To Albany, 4-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Albany, 4-1, on Saturday, August 31 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars drop to 1-1 on the season, while Albany improves to 2-0.

Albany took a 1-0 lead just 6:54 into the game as Echo Bretz deflected the ball past the Friars' goalkeeper off a cross from Laura Page. Providence answered right back to tie the game, 1-1, less than a minute later (7:34) as sophomore Salene Shaffer (Millerstown, Pa.) collected a loose ball, as Albany's defense attempted to clear it out of the circle, and directed it into the cage. It marked the first goal of Shaffer's career.

Albany regained the lead (2-1) at the 10:44 mark as Liza Morgan deflected the ball into the cage off an initial shot taken by Paula Heuser. Heuser was credited with the assist on the play. The Great Danes maintained their one-goal lead into the break.

In the second half, Albany scored two unanswered goals to close out the game and earn the 4-1 victory. At 51:32, Morgan recorded her second goal of the game and fifth of the season as she deflected another ball from Heuser at the left post.

Corrine McConville rounded out the scoring at 59:50 as she converted a penalty stroke.

Providence goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) registered seven saves in the loss, while Maxi Primus earned the victory with three saves.

Albany held a 13-4 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in penalty corners.

The Friars return to action on Wednesday, September 4 against Holy Cross. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
