Women's Tennis Battles For Conference Win

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated the Connecticut Huskies, 4-3, to earn their first BIG EAST win of the season. The Friars hosted the Huskies on Monday, April 8 for their first home win since October 6, when the Friars toppled Rhode Island 7-0.

The Friars lost the doubles point to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. Doubles partners senior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) fell at the No. 1 position to Abby McKeon and Lucy Nutting (8-4). At the No. 2 position freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) fell to Maxene Weinberg and Srna Stosljevic (8-2). The lone Friar pair to earn a win were freshmen Olivia Hogan (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) against Jennifer Learmonth and Marie Gargirlo (8-5).

Providence picked up its play during the singles round. Zangari tied the match at 1-1 for the Friars with a win at the No. 5 position in straight sets against Natalie Robson (6-3, 6-2). Bernardez followed Zangari with win in straight sets at the No. 2 position. Bernardez handily defeated Weinberg (6-3, 6-3) for the first time of her career to give the Friars a 2-1 lead.

The Huskies tied the match, 2-2, with a win at No. 4 singles. Corder fell to McKeon (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) at the No. 4 position before Prinos reclaimed the lead for the Friars with a win over Nutting (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) at the No. 3 position.

With the Friars leading 3-2, sophomore Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had a come back victory against Learmonth (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) at the No. 6 position to clinch the match for the Friars. Aviles-Duron fell to Stosljevic (6-7 [4], 6-3, 6-4) in a close fought match at the No. 1 position to finish the day.

With the win, the Friars move to an overall record of 11-5, clinching a winning record for the season for the first time since the 2001-02 season when the team went 11-8 on the season.
