Women's Tennis Earns Second Straight Win

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Providence College women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win against Quinnipiac on Tuesday, April 9 in Hamden, Conn. The Friars came back from dropping the doubles point to win with their singles play to move their overall record to 12-5 (1-2 BIG EAST).

Doubles partners senior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) competed at the No. 1 position, where the pair fell to Rachel Cantor and Sarah Viebrock (9-7). Freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) were defeated by Mary Chupa and Jacqueline Raynor at the No. 2 position (8-5). Freshmen Olivia Hogan (Githersburg, Md.) and Hannah Zangari(Saunderstown, R.I.) were the lone pair to earn a win in the doubles rounds. Hogan and Zangari defeated Ariana Launie and Erin Suva at the No. 3 position (5-1 Ret.).

Zangari later went on to defeat Carly Loewenstein at the No. 5 singles position in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) to tie the match at one. Following Zangari's match, sophomore Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) toppled Nicole Keklik at the No. 6 position (6-1, 6-0) to give the Friars a 2-1 advantage.

Quinnipiac's Raynor quickly tied the match at two with a win at the No. 2 position over Bernardez (6-3, 6-2). The Bobcats did not go down without a fight. Cantor defeated Aviles-Duron at the No. 1 position in a third set (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) to earn a 3-2 advantage.

Prinos and Corder were the stars of the match with a tying win and a match clincher. Prinos tied the match at three apiece with a win at the No. 3 position against Viebrock (6-7 [1], 6-2, 7-6). Corder clinched the match for the Friars with a huge win over Suvar at the No. 4 position (6-2, 5-7, 7-6 [3]).

The Friars wrap-up their regular season play with two home matches. On Saturday, April 13 Providence will face conference foe Villanova at 11:00 a.m. and on Sunday, April 14 the Friars will host St. Johns at 1:00 p.m. in their final conference game of the season.
