Women's Tennis Defeats Albany, 5-2

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated the University of Albany Great Danes 5-2 on Sunday, Feb. 10. The win moves the Friars overall record to 6-1 for the 2012-13 season and 2-0 since the start of spring play.

In doubles play the Friars had two pairs take their matches to give Providence the point. Senior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Maria Clara Bernardez(Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) fell to Kristen Scott and Rocio Lopez Alberca at the No. 1 doubles position (8-3).

Sophomore Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and freshman Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) defeated Sarah Iannone and Francine White at No. 3 doubles (8-3), while freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Corder(Corinth, Miss.) clinched the doubles point for the Friars with a win over Mireille Hermans and Cathryn Crummery at the No. 2 doubles position (8-2).

Ramirez kicked off singles play for the Friars with a win at No. 5 singles over Iannone (6-3, 6-0). Zangari followed Ramirez with a win at No. 6 singles against White (6-3, 6-1). With the Friars ahead 3-0 in the match Albany's Crummey defeated Corder at No. 4 singles (6-4, 7-5).

At No. 2 singles, Bernardez won what was the match clincher in a close fought battle against Hermans (6-2, 4-6, 6-4). Prinos fell to Lopez at No. 3 singles (6-4, 5-7, 6-3), while Aviles-Duron finished play with a win at No. 1 singles over Scott (2-6, 7-5, 7-6).

The Friars are back in action Sunday, Feb. 17 when they travel to cross-town rival Brown. The Friars will head to Brown for a 4:00 p.m. match.
