CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --The Providence College volleyball team (1-12) was defeated in four sets (25-20, 20-25, 13-15 and 15-25) by Manhattan (3-6) in the Harvard Tournament on Saturday, September 8. Earlier in the day, the Friars were defeated by host Harvard in straight sets.
The first set was closely contested with the lead changing four times. The Friars and Jaspers stayed within two points of each other until the Friars took a three point lead at 22-19. The Friars closed out the set scoring three of the final four points, taking the first set 25-20.
The Friars jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the second set but Manhattan came back to tie the set at 10-10. At 14-all, the Jaspers scored five consecutive points to take the lead 19-14, and would hold on to take the set 25-20. The third set saw Manhattan grab an early 11-4 lead before stretching that lead to nine points at 17-8. Manhattan would go on to take the third set 25-13. The Jaspers used a 10 consecutive point streak during the fourth set to take control of the set, before closing out the match with a 25-15 set win.
Sophomore Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) picked up a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) also secured a double-double after collecting a team-high 34 assists and 11 digs. Senior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the Friars with 15 digs and sophomore Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) picked up 12 kills. McCollom, who collected 24 kills and 11 digs over the weekend, was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Friars will play their next match versus in-state rival Brown University on the road on Wednesday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.
Providence will play its first match at home this season on Sunday, October 7 versus America East foe Stony Brook. This match will mark the first athletic event played in the renovated Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall.
