NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Seton Hall Pirates by the score of 79-47 on Tuesday, March 6, in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden. The game marks the 90th time the two teams have met and the seventh meeting at the BIG EAST Tournament.The Friars shoot 26.8 percent from the field. Freshman LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) scored 10 points in the game.
The Friars started the second half with a three-pointer by Cotton but they could not convert it into a run. Seton Hall went on a 14-7 run to lead, 50-30, with 15:10 on the clock and would not look back. The Pirates took their largest lead of 35 points with 25 seconds to play and finished the game with a 32 point edge, 79-47.
Herb Pope and Brandon Mobley scored 16 points apiece for the Pirates. Jordan Theodore registered a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
In the first half, no points were scored until 17:23 on the clock when Henton made a basket that sparked a 9-0 run. The Pirates responded with a 34-10 run to take their largest lead of the half, 34-19, with 1:32 on the clock. Seton Hall led 36-23 entering the locker room.
The Friars finished the season with a 15-17 mark.
