DURHAM, N.H. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by the University of New Hampshire by a final score of 3-1 on Friday, February 3 in a Hockey East game played at the Whittemore Center. The Wildcats scored three times in the first period, including twice on the power play and held on for the win.
UNH (10-14-2, 6-11-1 Hockey East) jumped ahead 1-0 just 1:30 into the game when Nick Sorkin slipped a pass to Eric Knodel who fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle and recorded his second goal of the season. Later in the period, Grayson Downing and Stevie Moses each scored a power-play goal to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Providence (10-13-2, 8-9-1 Hockey East) pulled to within, 3-1, early in the second period as junior Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) connected on his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Freshman Drew Brown (Grass Lake, Mich.) stole the puck and played it behind the UNH net to senior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.). Bergland then slid a back-handed pass in front to Schaller who tapped the puck into the open side of the net. The Friars had several strong chances to take cut the lead even further, but UNH goalie Casey DeSmith made some point-blank stops. Providence finished with a 14-6 edge in shots in the second period.
Providence also held a 14-6 advantage in shots in the third period, but could not get any closer. Overall, the Friars outshot the Wildcats, 38-22, as DeSmith made 37 saves. Providence senior Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) made 19 stops.
The two teams will complete the home-and-home weekend series at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4 at Providence's Schneider Arena. Tickets are still available. Click here to get the best seat for the game.
