On Saturday, February 11, the Providence College Athletics Department invited each of its former female student-athletes back to Smith Hill to celebrate 40 Years of Women's Athletics at the College. The event, which coincided with Alumni & Family Weekend, was highly successful and well attended by many former Friars from each of the four previous decades. The celebration also was attended by many current student-athletes and coaches.
A reception was held in the Ruane Atrium of The Concannon Fitness Center from 12-2 p.m., and all attendees were honored at halftime of the women's basketball game vs. Seton Hall, which began at 2 p.m. The game was televised live by Cox Sports.
In addition to the reception, attendees were able to participate in painting a mural, which originated from a collaborative effort between the Art and Art History Departments and the Athletics Department known as SPORT:ART. The mural, which was developed by California-based artist Peter Tigler, features three current Providence College cross country runners, merged with an ancient Greek vase painting (333 BCE), showing long-distance runners in the Panathenaic Greek Games in Athens. The mural is entitled "Be Transformed".
The current Providence College runners showcased in the 12-feet x 7-feet mural are Emily Sisson `14, Laura Nagel `14 and Hannah Davidson `12. The original photograph of the Providence College runners was taken by current Friar cross country and track athlete Dominic Channon `13, who is a studio art major and art history minor. Channon took part in a Student Sports Photography Class, along with four other students, and some of their works are currently on display in the Hunt-Cavanagh Gallery on campus. The mural was started on Friday, February 10 at an invitation only event held at the Smith Center. It was finished during the 40 Years of Women's Athletics reception on February 11. Additionally, a television crew from Inside the BIG EAST was on hand to capture the events on campus. It is scheduled to air on SNY on Friday, February 17 at 2:30 p.m. and at 10:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, February 18 at 6:00 p.m. For those in Rhode Island, Inside the BIG EAST will air on Cox Sports (Cox channel 3) on Saturday, February 18 at 11:00 a.m. and Sunday, February 19 at 9:30 a.m.
