Providence College softball Head Coach Kerri Jacklets announced that student-athletes Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.), Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.), Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Josie Dexter (Bradley, Ill.) and Kacy Williams (Midlothian, Texas) have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2012.
Amos is a pitcher who has starred at Malden High School and for the Concord Raiders. She has been honored as the Greater Boston League's Most Valuable Player in the past three seasons, and is also the three-time Malden Evening News/Medford Daily Mercury Softball Player of the Year. She has been recognized in the past two seasons as a Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic athlete. In the past three seasons, Amos has struck out over 500 batters, shattering all school and league pitching records for both a single season and career. "Kiara approaches the game with great energy and enthusiasm," said Lisa McGloin, Head Coach of the Raiders. "She makes all that she does fun while still being a fierce competitor and great contributor." Amos also has four years of varsity experience for both the field hockey and basketball teams at Malden High school, serving as captain for both teams in her senior season. She is an honor roll student and was elected Senior Class President earlier this fall.
The Friars have added speed to their lineup with the additions of outfielders Baldassari and Williams. Kiki Baldassari is described by Keith Heinneman, her coach at Morris Knolls High School, as "a high character kid with an outstanding work ethic. She has such passion for the game and is always looking to improve. Not only is she a great softball player, she is an even better teammate and person." In her junior season, Baldassari batted over .400 and was 21-for-21 in stolen base attempts as her team won the NJSIAA North 1 Group IV Championship. For her efforts, she was named First Team All-Morris County, All-Conference, All-Daily Record Teams, and Second Team All-Group IV. Baldassari also plays for the New Jersey Pride organization, where she has excelled as the leadoff batter. Coach Rob Stern of the Pride calls Baldassari "one of the most dynamic players we have ever coached. She is so talented and puts great pressure on a defense as a slapper, bunter, and hitter. Providence is getting a great student-athlete." She also runs indoor track for Morris Knolls, competing in the 55-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles and relays. Baldassari is an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society.
Williams plays for Midlothian High School under Coach Frank Griffin, who described her as "a very spirited player that can make the most of anything on the field. With Kacy's speed she is a threat anytime she steps up to the plate. She can see the defense and work with what they give her by slapping to an open gap or sitting back and driving it to the outfield. Kacy has worked very hard in the offseason and has become a leader with her work ethic as well as being a vocal leader and pulling her teammates along when they are having a bad day. She is a fun loving young lady that represents our program very well on and off the field." Williams also plays under Coach Alyson Trout for the American Freedom organization. Of Williams, Trout said: "Kacy is a spark plug. When Kacy is at the top of the order and doing what she does best she ignites our offense and makes our team go. She always has a positive attitude and is a pleasure to be around. In addition, her desire to win is unmatched." Williams was named to the All-District Team in 2011 and she ranked seventh on the season in Dallas/Fort Worth for stolen bases. She received Academic All-District honors in 2010 and 2011. Off the field, Williams is a member of the National Honor Society and a student council representative.
Deraney, who can play either third base or first base, attends Shrewsbury High School and is a member of the Concord Raiders. Coach McGloin of the Raiders highlights Deraney's leadership skills and work ethic, describing her as "consistently hard working; she demands one hundred percent effort from herself and those around her. Danielle is a total team player in every sense of the word and does whatever she can to make herself and her team better." Since her freshman year at Shrewsbury, Deraney has been honored by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette as a member of the All-Star Team and has also been recognized as a Mid-Watch League All-Star. As a sophomore, she won the Mid-Watch League batting title. Deraney also plays basketball and volleyball for Shrewsbury and was named the MVP of the basketball team in 2010-11. In her senior year, she is a captain for both the basketball and softball teams. She has also had extensive leadership experiences with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association as a member of the MIAA Leadership Summit in her junior year and serving as an MIAA Student Ambassador her senior year.
Rounding out the Friars' signees is Josie Dexter, a catcher, corner and outfielder for both Bishop McNamara High School and the Illinois Homer Hawks organization. Dexter is described by her Hawks coach Dave Betcher as "the most proficient pitch caller I have ever coached. It is amazing to listen to her thought process on calling a game to the strengths of her pitcher. She is not afraid to call the tough-to-handle pitch with runners on base or to challenge herself to pick up her teammates in a close game with an aggressive pick-off." On the field, Dexter has been named to numerous All-Area, All-Tournament and All-Conference teams. The Hawks recently finished second at 18U Gold Northern Nationals. In the classroom, Dexter has spent her high school academic career on the Gold Honor Roll. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society and was recently named an Illinois State Scholar. Dexter also competes on the swimming and basketball teams for Bishop McNamara.
"Our staff is extremely excited about our 2012 signees," Jacklets said. "All five of these athletes have had success at the national level with their travel teams, and we anticipate that this class will be able to make an impact on the BIG EAST Conference. Each of these athletes brings a different skill set to our program. Kiara has great presence and strength on the mound. Kiki and Kacy will both add speed to our lineup and put pressure on opposing defenses. Josie and Danielle both add power to our lineup, and are versatile on defense. As a whole, we are bringing in a group with great experience and are fortunate to welcome these five players into our program."
