Field Hockey Falls To New Hampshire, 6-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to New Hampshire, 6-1, at Lennon Family Field on Sunday, September 4. The Friars fall to 0-3, while the Wildcats improve to 4-0.

For the second-straight game the Friars got on the scoreboard early, but could not hold on. Providence took a 1-0 lead 8:34 into the game as senior Ashley Mulkey (Windham, N.H.) connected off a direct shot on a penalty corner. Sophomore Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.) and freshman Henni Tietze (Augustin, Germany) assisted on the goal. Junior goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) took the loss in net despite making five saves.

New Hampshire got a hat trick from Hayley Rausch and one goal each from Kyle Lyons, Casey Pohlmeyer and Megan Bozek. Lyons, Rausch, Bozek, Whitney Frates, Emma Erler and Kendall Deck each added an assist for UNH. Katherine Nagengast got the win in goal, making three saves.

After Providence opened the scoring, UNH responded just over two minutes later when Rausch punched it in from five yards out.

Rausch found the back of the cage again at the 12:58 mark to give UNH a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats scored twice more in the opening period, with Pohlmeyer and Bozek both connecting off penalty corners.

The Friars had a chance to cut the lead at the end of the half, after being rewarded two-straight penalty corners with no time left on the clock, but were unable to connect.

The PC defense held up well in the second half, until the Wildcats got a pair of goals in the 57th minute. Lyons connected off a penalty corner before Rausch scored on a deflection just 27 seconds later to provide the final margin (6-1).

Providence (0-3) returns to action on Wednesday, September 7 against UC Davis. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
