PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated UC Davis, 3-2, on September 7 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Brittany Ross (Scarborough, Maine) recorded a career-high two goals to lead the Friar effort. Providence improves to 1-3 on the season, while UC Davis drops to 2-2. Each of the Friars' three losses to start the season came at the hands of nationally-ranked teams.
Ross got the Friars on the board to take a 1-0 lead as she drove a low hard shot at UC Davis' goalkeeper from the right side of the circle. The ball rebounded off the keeper's pads and she knocked home the rebound.
UC Davis rallied to tie the game, 1-1, as Casey Wollbrinck found the back of the cage off a direct shot on a penalty corner at the 28:52 mark. Amanda Marinac and Kristen Lopez were credited with assists on the play.
Just over a minute later, Ross put the Friars back on top, 2-1, for her second goal of the game. Freshman Henni Tietze (Augustin, Germany) sent a crossing pass through the circle from the left side of the field and Ross deflected the ball into the cage near the right post. Tietze notched the assist. Providence took its 2-1 lead into halftime, as the Friars outshot the Aggies, 10-4. Providence also held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners during the opening half.
The Aggies struck first in the second half in the 55th minute as Lopez sent a ball toward the cage from the top of the circle and Emily Mecke deflected it in for the equalizer.
The score remained tied, 2-2, until the Friars punched in a goal with just 5:03 left in the game. An initial shot by senior Ashley Mulkey (Windham, N.H.) was saved during a penalty corner, and a scramble for the ball ensued in front of the goalkeeper. Freshman Callie Vitalo (East Setauket, N.Y.) gained possession and flipped the ball to fellow freshman Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.), who tallied her first collegiate goal. Vitalo was credited with the assist.
Senior goalkeeper Shannon DiStefano (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the victory in goal for Providence with seven saves. Mulkey came away with a defensive save for the Friars as well. Conley Craven made five saves in goal for UC Davis.
Providence (1-3) returns to action on Friday, September 9 against No. 15 Iowa. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field on the campus of Providence College at 2:00 p.m.
