New Haven, Conn. - The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), 2-1, on Friday, September 2 in its first game of the Yale Soccer Classic. Although Providence outshot the Blue Devils 18-8, they were unable to score the equalizer. The Friars are now 1-1-3 overall.
Senior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) was able to get off the first shot of the game just 22 seconds into the game but Nikola Deiter made the save. Rosie MacGuire responded with a goal in the second minute for the Blue Devils. In the fourth minute CCSU found the back of the net again to extend its lead, 2-0. The Friars had a total of six scoring opportunities in the first half but Deiter proved to be impenetrable.
In the second half, the Friars once again had the first shot by freshman Allison Walton (Brunswick, Maine) that sailed wide of the goalmouth. In the 60th minute, senior Laura Di Clemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored on a ball from Collins to put the Friars on the board but this would be the team's only goal. The loss ended PC's four-game unbeaten streak to start the season. The four-game stretch to begin a season is the longest since 2006 when Jim McGirr's squad had a five-game unbeaten streak (2-0-3).
The Friars play their final game of the Yale Soccer Classic on Sunday, September 4 at 2:30 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
