New Haven, Conn. - The Providence College women's soccer team tied the Yale bulldogs, 0-0, on Sunday, September 4 in New Haven, Conn. Although the Friars outshot Yale, 14-6, none made it to the back of the net.
The Friars put pressure on the Bulldogs early, with two shots in the fourth minute from freshmen Kendra McMullen (Londonderry, Northern Ireland) and Allison Walton (Brunswick, Maine) but both were saved. Later, in the 12th minute freshman Alexia Shea (Brewster, N.Y.) tried to bury a shot in the back of the net, but was turned down by Yale goalie, Adel Jackson-Gibson.
In the second half, the Friars maintained a strong offensive effort , firing a total of nine shots. McMullen had an additional two shots, one coming in the last second of regulation while senior Laura Di Clemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) also was able to get a shot off early in the second half. Senior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) shot twice, including a header that sailed over the net. Junior Mary Vercollone also attempted to score twice, her second shot hitting the crossbar in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Alyssa Martino (Plainville, Conn.) completed the shooting for the Friars with two shots.
In overtime, only three shots were taken, two by Yale and one from the Friars. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) made two saves to ensure a shutout. The game marks the team's third shutout and Walker's second shutout of the season.
The Friars are back in action at Brown on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m.
