PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College men's basketball coach Ed Cooley announced on May 13 that student-athlete Kiwi Gardner (Manteca, Calif.) signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2011.

"Kiwi Gardner is an exciting basketball player and we are looking forward to having him as part of our team next season," Cooley said. "He comes from a good program at Westwind with Coach Gary Trousdale and he also played for a strong AAU Team in Drew Gooden's Oakland Soldiers. Kiwi has great speed with the basketball and that enables him to get to the basket. He also plays tenacious defense and we need that from all of our players."

Gardner, a 5-foot-7-inch, 155-pound guard attends Westwind Prep Academy (Phoenix, Ariz.). He averaged 23.7 points, seven assists, four steals and four rebounds per game, while playing for Head Coach Gary Trousdale and leading Westwind to a 30-2 season and a state title.

Prior to attending Westwind Prep, Gardner spent three seasons at Manteca High School. As a junior in 2010, he averaged 24 points, 3.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 steals as he helped the Buffaloes register a 23-6 mark. He recorded an impressive 41-point, 10-rebound, eight-assist and four-steal performance as a junior in an 89-75 win over Weston Ranch. As a sophomore he also had a strong season, as Manteca finished with a 24-4 mark. Gardner averaged 19.8 points, 6.0 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game.

Gardner played AAU basketball for Drew Gooden's Oakland Soldiers from Oakland, Calif.

"To see Kiwi go to the BIG EAST from California and accomplish one of his many dreams is a blessing," stated Mark Olivier, Director of the Nike Elite Basketball Program, Drew Gooden's Oakland Soldiers. "This also is a great honor for the prestigious Oakland Soldiers team."

Gardner joins LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) as newcomers to the Friar roster who will attend Providence College in the fall.
