Track and Field Dazzles at Penn Relays

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams completed a three day challenge against the nation's best, turning in several outstanding performances at the 117th Penn Relays.
On the women's side, freshman Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) continued her outstanding outdoor season by earning second place in the Championship division of the 3000-meters. Her time of 9:27.14 is her fastest 3K as a collegiate athlete. Also impressing in the event were classmate Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) and senior Emma Perron (West Hartfield, Conn.), who crossed the line in 9:51.37 and 9:52.34, respectively.
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, junior Hannah Davidson placed fifth in the Championship division, falling just six seconds shy of her personal best with a 10:21.52. The time was nearly 50 seconds faster than the BIG EAST qualifying standard.
In the 5000-meter championship, classmate Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) posted a clocking of 17:54.09
The men's performances were highlighted by the outstanding effort of the distance medley relay team of Julian Mathews (Nelson, New Zealand; 1200m), Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.; 400m) Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand; 800m) and David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland; 1500m). The Friar quartet earned fifth place in the Championship division with a sizzling 9:40.99.
In the 5000-meters, freshman Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, England) completed the endeavor in 14:38.17, nearly nine seconds faster than the time needed to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship.
Also running well was the 4x400 contingent of Friars Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.) Tom Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.), Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.), and Chris Booker (Philadelphia, Pa.), with Booker returning to his hometown to help his team cross in 3:25.07.
Several Friars will compete again Sunday, May 1, at the Brown Springtime Invitational.
