PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior guard Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored a game-high 27 points, but it was not enough as the Providence College men's basketball team (14-13; 3-11 BIG EAST) fell 93-81 in overtime to Cincinnati Saturday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
The Friars outscored UC, 39-33 in the second half, which gave PC its first overtime session of the season.
Brooks' 27-point effort marked the fourth-consecutive game in which he has scored 25 points-or-more. Brooks has scored 25 points-or-more in 15 games this season. He has also scored at least 20 points in 21 of the last 22 games.
Freshman Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) and sophomore Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also scored in double figures, finishing with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Batts pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to record his second double-double of the year.
Cincinnati opened up a 10-4 lead at the 16:05 mark. Five minutes later, the Bearcats would extend their lead to nine (19-10). PC fought back and cut its deficit to five at 32-27 with 4:05 remaining until intermission.
In the final four minutes of the first half, PC was outscored 8-7 as the Bearcats took a 40-34 lead into the locker room. Both teams shot over 45 percent from the field, but UC held a 50.0-48.4 advantage from the floor.
Brooks led all PC scorers with 11 first-half points. Batts also chipped in with eight points and pulled down a team leading five rebounds in the period.
Cincinnati came out firing in the second half as it opened up a 16-point lead with 9:11 to go in the game. PC fought back as it trimmed the Bearcats' lead to 10 with just under six minutes to play.
Following a Brooks' 3-pointer, PC climbed to within five points at 67-62 with just under three and a half minutes to go. PC would then close to within two at 69-67 thanks to a 3-pointer Vincent Council.
The Friars tied the game at 71 apiece with just under 1:30 to go thanks to a 3-pointer from the corner by sophomore guard Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Less than a minute later, PC took its first lead of the game at 73-72 as Brooks drilled a running layup with 32 seconds remaining.
UC tied the game on its next offensive possession as senior Rashad Bishop split a pair of free throws, which sent the game into overtime. In the overtime session, UC outscored PC, 20-8 to secure the win.
Providence returns to the action on Wednesday as it welcomes No. 7/8 Notre Dame to the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The game can be seen on Cox Sports.
