PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated UMass-Lowell,76-75, in its second and final exhibition game at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday, November 5.
The River Hawks, who were ranked No. 10 in the Sporting News Division II preseason poll, gave the Friars all they could handle. Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded a game-high 26 points and helped the Friars secure the victory. Junior Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the second leading scorer for the Friars with 14 points and eight assists.
In the first half, the Friars opened up to an early 6-0 lead, as they held the River Hawks until the 16:30 minute mark when Akeem Williams came off a screen to hit the first three of the game. Freshman LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) scored first, 14 seconds into play. The Friars athleticism caused the Riverhawks to go to 2-3 zone. Providence continued to play strong offensively with Council scoring 10 and Cotton scoring 12 points in the half. Council went 4-for-6 from behind the free throw line while Cotton was 5-for-6 from the field and 1-for-2 from behind the arc.
The River Hawks closed the gap in the first half, with two three point field goals by Akeem Williams and Matt Welch. But the Friars didn't quit, as they started to run the ball, resulting in their biggest lead in the first half, 34-20. Council ran a pick and roll with Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) who finished with a dunk. But the Hawks made a 13-2 run in the last 3:30 minutes of the first half to tie the game at 37 a piece going into the half.
In the second half, neither team came out strong until freshman Brice Kofane (Yaounde, Cameroon) sparked the Friars with a shot block. This started a 10-6 run, including a steal by Henton and his dunk opened up the lead to 11 points. The River Hawks turned on a full court press that caused the Friars to two turnovers sparking a 10-0 run. Then a fast break was led by Council who then made a pass to Henton for the dunk. Kofane made another fantastic block that led to Cotton's two free throws. Williams had a chance to win the game for the River Hawks but missed the three-point attempt, which essentially sealed the win for Providence.
The Friars went on to win 76-75. Offensive rebounds were a key factor in the game as Providence finished with 21. Another factor was fast break points as they Friars outscored the River Hawks 16-2.
The Friars open up the 2011-12 regular season next Saturday, November 12 when they host Farleigh Dickinson. Tipoff at the Dunkin' Donuts Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
