PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, 72-61, on Saturday, November 12 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Ed Cooley earned his first victory as head coach of Providence College and the Friars improve to 1-0 on the season.

Four Providence players finished in double-figures including sophomore Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) who scored a team-high 18 points off the bench. Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) added a career-high 16 points, while junior Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded 12 points, and freshman LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) put in 10.

The Friars led the Knights, 33-28, at the half, as they shot 41.4%, making 12-of-29 from the field. Providence shot 50% from behind the arc as it was 5-of-10. Freshman LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) canned the first basket of the season with a 3-pointer to give Providence an early 3-0 lead 30 seconds into the contest. Fairleigh Dickinson tied it, 3-3, before the Friars went on a 7-0 run and led, 10-3, with 16:18 left in the first half. Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) scored eight of the Friars' first 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. The Friar lead grew to as many as 12 (17-5) with 13:08 left in the first half.

Fairleigh Dickinson's junior guard Lonnie Hayes poured in 14 of his game-high 26 points in the first half. The Knights held a slight advantage in rebounding, 22-20.

In the second half, the Friars continued to build their lead, shooting 47% from the field, making 15-31. The Friars outscored the Knights, 39-33, and went on to earn their first game of the season.

Overall, the Friars shot 44.3% from the field, making 27-61 and held an advantage in rebounds, 41-38. More importantly, the Friars held FDU to just 36.8 percent shooting.

With the win, Ed Cooley became the first PC coach to begin his Friar career with a victory since Pete Gillen in 1994. Under Gillen, the Friars topped another New Jersey team, Rider 72-59 on Nov. 26.

Providence will return to action when it travels to face Fairfield on Monday, November 14. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be aired live on 103.7 WEEI-FM.
