PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team put together an impressive performance, taking the No. 5 Pittsburgh Panthers down to the wire, before falling, 83-79, in BIG EAST action on Tuesday, January 4, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

The Friars (11-5, 0-3 BIG EAST) were led by 28 points from senior guard Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.). He added six rebounds. Sophomore guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a double-double for the Friars, scoring 13 points and adding ten assists, as well as picking up six steals.

Pittsburgh (14-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) was led by 19 points from senior Gilbert Brown, who was 7-8 from the field, including 5-6 from three-point range. Senior Gary McGhee added 13 points and nine rebounds.

With 2:20 left, sophomore Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) connected for a three to make it a one-point game, 72-71. That was followed by Brooks drawing a charge from Wannamaker and a Batts layup to put the Friars up 73-72 with 2:10 left. Batts drew another charge at the other end, again from Wannamaker, his fifth personal foul. Brooks followed with a three to give the Friars a four-point lead with 1:20 to go.

After a McGhee layup cut the Friar lead to 76-74, with 1:04 remaining, Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon took a timeout. Providence followed with a turnover, and sophomore Travon Woodall connected for his first basket of the game from beyond the arc to put Pitt up, 77-76. Coleman missed a three-pointer and the Panthers got the rebound. Batts' fifth foul sent McGhee to the line, where he connected for both to put Pitt up, 79-76.

Down three with less than 20 seconds remaining, the Friars went for a quick basket. Council was fouled and missed both free throws. Pitt got the rebound and Woodall went to the line, making both free throws to put Pitt up, 81-76. Brooks connected for three to pull the Friars back within two, 81-79, with 3.6 seconds remaining. Woodall went back to the line with 2.6 seconds left and hit both free throws to provide the final margin of 83-79.

The Friars return to the court on Saturday, January 8, when they open a three-game road trip with a visit to Rutgers. Tipoff in Piscataway, N.J., is set for 8:00 p.m. and the game can be seen on Cox Sports and SNY.
