The Providence College men's swimming and diving team (1-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell to Maine on Saturday, January 15, 185-110, while the women (0-8, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped their decision, 207-84. In the meet, the Black Bear men won 12 of the 16 contested events. On the women's side, Maine won 14 of the 16 events.
The Friar men were led by freshman Kenny Savage (Basking Ridge, N.J.), freshman Andrew St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.) and junior Collin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.). Savage came from behind to defeat Maine's Jeremy Bender to win the 200y backstroke in a final time of 2:02.64. St. Pierre was impressive for the Friars, as he scored in four events he competed in, including a third-place finish in the 200y breaststroke (2:22.20). Casciano provided the second win of the day by edging out Maine's Andrew Meehan by 14-hundreths-of-a-second (54.00) in the 100y butterfly. Through both individual and relay performances, Savage, St. Pierre and Casciano accounted for 21, 18 and 18 points for the Friars, respectively.
The women's squad posted a valiant effort, but came up short against the skilled Maine women's team. The Friars were led by freshman Kelly Hall (Morristown, N.J.). Hall scored 13 individual points for the Friars and added two more thanks to a third place finish in the 200y medley relay (1:56.70). Sophomore Sam Schlich (Massepequa, N.Y.) became the 30th Friar to qualify for this season's BIG EAST Championships. Schlich made the 'A' standard in the 50y free (25.46) and the 'B' standard in the 200y free (2:02.74).
In diving action, perennial winners Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.) and Amie Fracker (Trumbull, Conn.) were shut out of first place in each of the two 1m diving events, but did post impressive scores. The dives earned Black and Fracker second and third place in both heats, respectively.
