PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer improved to 4-1 on the season after defeating Marist, 1-0, on Sunday, September 5. Sophomore Mary Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the 43rd minute which proved to be the game winner. Junior Emily Castle (Stonington, Conn.) was credited the assist.
In the first half, Providence outshot Marist, 10-1, and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Vercollone would give the Friars the lead in the 43rd minute when she received the ball from Castle after a scramble in the box.
In the second half, the Friars would outshoot their opponent, 8-4, and would only give up one shot on goal. The Friars finished with a 18-5 shot advantage, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. It is Providence's fourth shutout of the season and Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) earned the victory and improved her record to 2-1 on the season.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, September 10 when they host Central Connecticut at 4:00 p.m. on Providence's Glay Field.
