Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer improved to 5-1 for the second time in the program's history after defeating Central Connecticut (CCSU), 3-2. CCSU would score in the seventh minute, but Providence would answer with three straight goals. The Blue Devils would score again in the 85th minute, but the Friars held off a few last minute surges to secure the victory.

CCSU's Beth Lloyd would score in the seventh minute when she received a ball from Nathalie Nilsson and took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and beat the goalkeeper to the far post. The Friars would tie up the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute off of a corner kick. Junior Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) crossed the ball to graduate student Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) who then knocked the ball to freshman Alyssa Martino (Plainville, Conn.) who buried the ball into the right side of the net. The goal is the first of Martino's career and both DiClemente and Camburn were awarded an assist.

In the second half, the Friars would take the lead in the 70th minute when sophomore Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.) socred her second goal of the season. DiClemente played the ball into the box where Roncarati flicked the ball backwards and into the net.

It would only take Providence 58 seconds to score again when senior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) would score her first goal of the season off of a cross from graduate student Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.). CCSU's Beth Lloyd would score her second goal of the game in the 86th minute off of a penalty kick, but the Friars would hold of the Blue Devils and escape with the victory.

Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) would earn the victory for the Friars. Providence finished the game with a 20-8 shot advantage, including a 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, September 12 when they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to take on the Bryant University Bulldogs at noon.
