Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer (6-2-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) was defeated by Syracuse, 1-0, on Thursday, September 23. Syracuse's Alyscha Mottershead scored with 10 seconds left on the clock to lift the Orange over the Friars and improve to 2-0 in the BIG EAST.

Starting off the first half, the Friars came out firing on all cylinders. In the fourth minute, junior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) received a long ball from sophomore Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.). Collins settled the ball and ripped a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box, but missed the target just right. The Friars almost pulled ahead again in 15th minute when junior Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) played a dead ball into the 18-yard box. Roncarati headed the ball from six yards out, but Syracuse's goalkeeper Brittany Anghel blocked the attempt. The ball deflected back out to Collins who took a shot from four yards out, but Anghel again came up with the save.

Perhaps Providence's best scoring opportunity came in the 19th minute. Sophomore Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) and senior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) had a two-versus-one. Webster laid the ball off to DelCiampo on the top right corner of the 18-yard box, but she missed the shot just right.

In the second half, the Friars had ample opportunities to take the lead. In the 56th minute, Webster dribbled the ball through the left side of the defense on the touchline and slid a pass to the top of the six-yard box where graduate student Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) took a shot that was saved. Camburn and Webster would hookup again in the 70th minute. Camburn played a through ball that sent Webster on a breakaway, but her shot was off target.

With only four minutes remaining in regulation, the Friars would secure a corner kick. Senior Lindsey Trubia (Mystic, Conn.) got a head on the ball and struck the crossbar.

The game seemed to be heading for overtime, but Syracuse made a surge with time winding down. Jenna Rickan would get the ball to Mottershead who took a shot from the right side of the box and buried the game winner in the top right corner with only 10 seconds left on the clock.

The Friars look to bounce back on Sunday, September 26 when they travel to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on St. John's University at 1:00 p.m.
