PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team (6-1-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) will host Syracuse University (4-3-3, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) on Thursday, September 23 at 4:00 p.m. on PC's Glay Field. The Friars enter the match with a four-game unbeaten streak.
The Friars are coming off a 0-0 draw in their BIG EAST Conference opener versus the University of Connecticut on September 17. In the match, the Huskies started off strong with a few early scoring opportunities, but the Friars would settle in and make their presence felt. In the first half, freshman Alyssa Martino (Plainville, Conn.), sophomore Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) and sophomore Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.) had quality opportunities to put their team ahead, but missed by the smallest of margins.
In the second half, the Friars would come close to going ahead in match again when junior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) ripped a shot from the top right corner of the 18-yard box that struck the crossbar. Collins' shot ricocheted to the left side of the box where senior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) took another rip, again hitting the crossbar. In the game, the Friars hit the crossbar three times and the side post twice.
The remainder of the game would go back and forth between the two sides, but end in a scoreless tie. It marks the first time that Providence has earned a point in its BIG EAST opener since 2002 when it tied Boston College, 2-2.
Defense has been the backbone for the Friars this year anchored by graduate student Kateline Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.), senior Marra Whaley (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Roncarati. The backline has notched six shutouts and allowed only six goals in eight games. Six shutouts is tied for the most in the BIG EAST with No. 7 Notre Dame.
In net, senior Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) and junior Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) have split playing time. Schott has played a total of 315 minutes, notched a stellar 0.29 goals against average and a 0.933 save percentage. Walker has played 425 minutes has earned a 4-1-1 record.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Friars have scored 16 times, only one goal shy of their 2009 total. Leading the way is Webster with four goals and graduate student Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) with three. Camburn leads the team in assists with five followed by junior Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) with three. Providence has 13 different players this season that have notched a point, giving the team a balanced offensive attack.
SCOUTING SYRACUSE: The Syracuse Orange enters the game against Providence with its own four game unbeaten streak. Syracuse opened its BIG EAST schedule oh September 17, defeating St. John's, 1-0. In the game, sophomore Rosina Callisto scored her first career goal and freshman Brittany Anghel recorded a career high in saves.
Syracuse holds an edge in the all-time series versus the Friars, 4-9-1, and won their last matchup 2-1 in overtime. The Friars hold a 2-3 record against the Orange under current head coach Jim McGirr.
