PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer tied the UConn Huskies, 0-0, after double overtime on Friday, September 17. The Friars improve to 6-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in BIG EAST play.
The Huskies started the game off strong but the backline led by sophomore Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.) and graduate student Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.) kept them off the board. The offense would come alive in the seventh minute when junior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) crossed the ball to freshman Alyssa Martino (Plainville, Conn.) whose header went just wide.
Freshman Stephanie Leonard (Framingham, Mass.) came off the bench towards the end of the half and made an immediate impact. She collected the ball and slid a pass to graduate student Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) who ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box but missed just high.
The Friars knocked on the door again in the 39th minute when junior Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) took a corner kick and Roncarati managed to position herself under the ball to get a header on net, but UConn goalkeeper Jessica Dulski came up with the save. Just before half, graduate student Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.) crossed the ball from 40 yards out to Camburn who settled the ball and laid it off to sophomore Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) whose shot was saved. The game would remain tied, 0-0, going into half.
As the second half started, the Friars came out strong, creating two early scoring opportunities. It took Camburn only a minute and a half to go on a breakaway, but the keeper came up with a game changing save. Five minutes later Webster took the ball into the 18 yard-box and had only the goalie to beat, but missed left of the net.
Junior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) took a laser shot from the top right corner of the box to the far post and hit the cross bar. Just two minutes later Camburn took a shot from inside the box that hit the cross bar again. The ball bounced back to senior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) who took another shot that hit the bar.
The Huskies had a golden scoring opportunity in the 70th minute. Annie Yi took a shot from just outside the top right corner of the six-yard box. Junior Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) made a diving save to her right to keep the game scoreless.
The two sides went back and forth for the remainder of the match with each having ample scoring opportunities. However, the game would stay scoreless and would need extra time to decide a winner.
Six minutes into the first overtime Leonard took a rip from the top left corner of the 18-yard box that was barely saved by the UConn goalie Dulski who just managed to keep it out the net. Dulski wasn't able to catch the original shot and a scramble for the ball ensued inside the six-yard box. Leonard almost got to it, but Dulski managed to jump on top of it.
After two overtime periods, the game would end in a 0-0 tie with UConn having an edge in shots, 23-22. It marks the Friars best finish against the Huskies since 1993 and gives them a point in the BIG EAST.
The Friars are back in action on Thursday, September 23 when they host Syracuse University at 4:00 p.m. on PC's Glay Field.
