DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Providence College volleyball team (4-10, 0-0) dropped its first match at the Bethune-Cookman Beach Bash to the host Wildcats in three sets (23-25, 23-25, 24-26).
The match featured 28 ties and 16 lead changes, with all three sets coming down to the wire. Junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the way for the Friars, notching 13 kills and hitting .379. Classmate Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) notched nine kills while hitting at an impressive .529 clip. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) picked up 31 assists, while adding seven digs.
Bethune-Cookman was led by Jessica Wilson, who notched 13 kills, while Krysta Gardner and Kaiyana Johnson each posted nine kills.
The first set saw the Wildcats notch 20 kills, while hitting .318, but the Friars stayed in it and led 23-22 before a service error by Morrison let Bethune-Cookman tie it and another Friar error followed by a Johnson kill sealed the set for the hosts, 25-23.
The second set saw Providence up 23-20 before Davis notched two kills and Johnson notched two service aces to give the Wildcats another 25-23 win. The third set was even more back-and-forth, with 12 ties and seven lead changes. The Friars again led late, this time 23-22, before Wilson and Johnson posted back-to-back kills to give the Wildcats a 24-23 lead. Fletcher kept the Friars alive, notching a kill to tie the set at 24-24, before back-to-back Friar errors gave Bethune-Cookman a 26-24 win.
Providence returns to the court tonight at 6:30 p.m. to take on Savannah State.
