Dave Gavitt Named Recipient of ECAC Commissioner's Award

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today that former Providence College Head Men's Basketball Coach and Athletics Director Dave Gavitt was named a recipient of the ECAC Commissioner's Award. The award will be presented at the 2010 ECAC Honors Banquet on Tuesday, September 28. The banquet will be held at the Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis, Mass. during the 2010 ECAC Fall Convention and Trade Show.

The award which was established in 2008 is presented for meritorious service to the ECAC or an ECAC member institution. Gavitt, who was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, was the coach of the Friars from 1969-1979. He compiled a 209-84 record in 10 seasons as head coach. During his tenure as head coach, he led the Friars to eight straight 20-win seasons, five NCAA Tournament appearances and the Final Four in 1973. He also served as the Director of Athletics at PC from 1971 until 1982 when he became the first Commissioner of the BIG EAST Conference.
