PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (12-12, 4-8 BIG EAST) fell to No. 7/8 Georgetown (18-5, 8-4 BIG EAST) by a score of 79-70 on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. After the Friars led by as many as seven (47-40) in the second half, the Hoyas used a 14-1 run over a span of 5:18 to pull away from PC and claim the victory.
Sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars with 23 points and added seven rebounds. It marked Peterson's third-straight game with at least 20 points and his fifth in the last six contests. Sophomore guard/forward Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) added 17 points, while freshman forward/center Bilal Dixon grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with his six points. Dixon has recorded 30 boards over the past two games.
The Friars attacked the basket aggressively to begin the game, scoring their first eight points in the paint to take an early 8-4 lead. Georgetown scored 12 of the next 13 points to move ahead 16-9 and a jumper by the Hoyas' Austin Freeman gave Georgetown a 22-15 lead at the 9:09 mark of the first half. A 3-pointer by senior guard Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) moved the Friars back within two at 22-20 and a lay-in by Peterson knotted the score at 22 with 5:48 to go in the stanza. After the Hoyas led by as many as five (27-22), the Friars re-took the lead on a 3-pointer by Brooks. On the next possession, two free throws by senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) gave PC a four-point advantage at 33-29 and the Friars took a 33-31 lead into intermission.
PC out-rebounded Georgetown (19-15) and made six steals to complete a strong defensive half. Peterson led the Friars with 10 points in the half.
Providence came out hot in the second half, using an 8-2 run to extend the lead to eight at 41-33. The Hoyas responded with five-straight points to move within three at 43-40, but a 3-pointer by Peterson helped the Friars go back up by seven (47-40). A 14-1 run by Georgetown over the next 5:16 propelled the Hoyas back in front, 54-48, at the 9:40 mark before a Curry 3-pointer broke the streak. With Georgetown clinging to a 56-54 lead, the Hoyas used their patented back-door cuts to connect on three-straight lay-ins and move ahead by six (62-56). The Friars would not move closer than five (69-64) for the remainder of the game.
Providence pulled down 42 rebounds to the Hoyas' 31 for the game and has now out-rebounded its opponent four times in the last five games. Despite the advantage on the glass, the Friars could not contain the ball movement of the Georgetown offense, as the Hoyas posted 46 of their 79 points in the paint. The team shot 60.7 percent (17-28) in the second half.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. when the team travels to Philadelphia, Pa. for a matchup with No. 4/5 Villanova at the Wachovia Center. The game is the second of four-straight for the Friars against teams ranked in the top-10 nationally.
