PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Providence College men's basketball team (12-13, 4-9 BIG EAST) fell to No. 4/5 Villanova (22-2, 11-1 BIG EAST) by the score of 92-81 on Saturday, February 13 before a crowd of 18,622 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa. With the Wildcats holding a 62-58 lead with 9:34 remaining in the contest, Villanova used a 17-7 run over the next 4:46 to take a 79-65 with less than five minutes to play. From there, the Wildcats held on for the victory.
Freshman guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Friars with a solid all-around game, posting 21 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) added 19 points, including four 3-pointers, while sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also recorded 19 points and added a team-high nine rebounds.
The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-3 advantage, connecting on three of their first four 3-point attempts. The Friars used an 8-2 run to move back within two at 13-11 and a 3-pointer by senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) kept PC within two at 16-14 at the 12:32 mark of the first half. PC took its first lead of the game on another 3-pointer by Curry (17-16) and the Friars pushed the lead to three (23-20) on a triple by junior guard/forward Marshon Brooks (Stone, Mountain, Ga.). Villanova answered back with a 15-4 run to jump ahead by eight at 35-27 with 4:19 to play in the half. After the Wildcats took a 39-30 lead, PC scored four of the final five points of the half to cut the lead to five (40-35) at halftime.
The Friars shot only 32.1 percent from the floor but made 12 free throws to Nova's three in the half. Curry led PC with 11 first-half points, connecting on three-of-five 3-point attempts.
PC scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 42-40 lead, but Villanova responded with six-straight to go back up four at 46-42. After the Friars rallied to tie the game at 46, a 3-pointer by Curry gave PC its first lead (49-46) since the nine minute mark of the first half. After a back and forth few minutes of action, the Wildcats tied the game at 51 and moved ahead by six at 62-56 with just under 10 minutes to play in the contest. The Friars could not move closer than four (62-58) over the next five minutes, and caught a tough break when Curry picked up a personal and technical foul on the same play with 9:14 to go. Curry had to sit for the rest of the game with five personal fouls. Bolstered by the sequence, Villanova used a 16-7 run over the next 4:26 minutes of action to take a 79-65 with 4:48 remaining in the contest. The Friars could not move closer than 11 (83-72) for the remainder of the game.
Villanova shot 47.1 percent (32-68) for the game and out-rebounded the Friars, 47-37. Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher each posted 22 points to lead the Wildcats. For the Friars, Curry's 19 points on the day now gives him 1,512 for his career and moves him past former teammate Weyinmi Efejuku '09 and into 12th place on PC's all-time scoring list.
Providence returns to action on Wednesday, February 17 with a home game against West Virginia. The 7:00 p.m. contest will be televised locally on Cox Sports 3 in Rhode Island.
