PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team improved its record to 8-1 on the season, scoring an 87-74 victory over intrastate rival Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon, December 4, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Rams fall to 5-3 on the season.

Senior guard Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the Friars in scoring for the sixth time in nine games, finishing with 26 points. The senior also made history at 15:36 of the first half when he hit a layup to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career at Providence. Brooks is the 43rd player in Providence College history to reach the 1,000 point mark.

Sophomore Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) led the Friars in rebounding with 12 boards, while adding a career-high six blocks. Classmate Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) flirted with a triple-double for PC, scoring 17 points while dishing out 10 assists and grabbing seven rebounds.

Rhode Island was led by senior Delroy James, who scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Marquis Jones (15 points), Daniel West (13 points) and Nikola Malesevic (10 points) were also in double-figures for the Rams.

The game was even throughout the first half, with the period featuring three ties and eight lead changes. URI pressed throughout the first 10 minutes of the game, but the steady hand of Council helped the Friars stay even with the Rams, as he scored 10 points and dished out four assists in the period, while only turning the ball over twice.

After URI called off the press, PC was able to push the lead to 12 points, 38-26, with 5:04 left in the half. Following a Rhode Island timeout, the Rams came back, going on an 11-2 run. URI would eventually cut the lead to three, 40-37, before a Council three-pointer pushed it back to a six-point Friar lead. URI would pick up the last basket of the half and trail 43-39 at the break.

The second half opened with a bang, as the Friars opened the scoring with a fast-break dunk by Coleman and James responded with a driving jam of his own. Providence took momentum next with a Dixon dunk and a three-pointer by Council, building a 52-43 lead with just over 16 minutes left.

Providence held off a URI rally that began when the Rams' Daniel West hit a three-pointer to pull Rhode Island back within nine, 67-58, with 6:39 remaining. The Friars pushed the lead back to 15 points, 77-62, with 3:03 remaining when Brooks blocked a Daniel West layup, then got to the other end of the floor to finish the play with a fast-break layup on a pass from sophomore guard Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

Strong defense helped the Friars secure the victory, as they held the Rams to 13-40 from the field and forced six turnovers in the half. PC also hit free throws when the mattered, shooting 18-22 from the free throw line in the period.

The Friars return to the court on Monday, December 6, when they wrap-up a four-game home stand against cross-town rival Brown. Tipoff against the Bears is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
