Marshon Brooks Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's basketball player Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. In the week covering December 6-12, the senior guard averaged 31.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in three games, leading the Friars to a 2-1 mark on the week.

Brooks opened the week with a career-high 33 points in a 91-64 win over crosstown rival Brown on December 6. He added eight rebounds in the game. He followed that up with a double-double in an 88-86 loss at Boston College on December 8, scoring 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He then duplicated his 33-point, eight-rebound performance in the 82-70 win over Alabama on December 11.

Brooks, who ranks second in the BIG EAST and 11th in the nation in scoring, leads the team in scoring on the season, averaging 22.9 points in 12 games. He also is second on the squad with 8.7 rebounds per game. He eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career earlier in the season, and currently stands at 1,116 points, tied for 30th in program history.

The award marks the first player of the week honor for a Providence men's basketball player since Weyinmi Efejuku won the honor since March 2, 2009. It is only the fifth time a Friar player has pulled down the honor since the BIG EAST expanded to its present 16-team format in 2005-06. Geoff McDermott (Dec. 27, 2007), Herbert Hill (Jan. 8 & March 4, 2007) are the other players to earn the award. since 2005-06
