PROVIDENCE PLAYS TWO HOME GAMES THIS WEEKEND... Providence College will complete its three-game home stand this weekend with a pair of games beginning on Friday, November 5 against Merrimack at Schneider Arena. PC also will host Vermont on Saturday, November 6.
HOME SWEET HOME... After a five-game road trip, Providence College returned home on Saturday, October 30 and defeated UMass, 3-2. Both of the Friars' wins this season have come at Schneider Arena as they have posted a 2-0 record.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MERRIMACK... In 108 meetings between the two teams, the Friars lead, 73-27-8, including a 42-14-2 mark in Providence. Last season, the Warriors took the season series with a 2-0-1 record with wins in North Andover, Mass. and in Providence, R.I. In the final regular season game last season, the two teams skated to a 1-1 overtime tie at Merrimack on March 6. PC is seeking its first win over the Warriors since January 31, 2009.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS... Merrimack is coming off a 4-2 win over No. 2 Boston College on Saturday, October 30 at Lawler Arena. The Warriors had four different goal scorers, including Joe Cucci, whose second period power-play goal proved to be the game winner. Cucci had one goal and one assist, Carter Madsen had two assists and Joe Cannata made 31 saves to lead the way. Stephane Da Costa leads the team in scoring with eight points on five goals and three assists, while Cucci is second with six points on two goals and four assists. Cannata has played on all five games and has a 2.44 goals against average and a .931 save percentage.
FRIAR QUICK NOTES... • Ten different Providence College players have scored at least one goal this season, including five Friars who have two goals or more. • Senior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) has one goal and one assist in two-straight games. • Sophomore Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) who had five points (two goals, three assists) in 33 games last season, already has five points (one goal, four assists) in seven games this season. • Providence has scored first in four of the seven games this season. • The Friars had not played five-consecutive road games since the start of the 1999-00 season when they played six consecutive contests away from Schneider Arena. • After not recording a point in the first four games this season, junior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.), who has been among PC's leading scorers over the past two seasons, has posted one goal and two assists in the last four games.
POWER SURGE... After not scoring a power-play goal in four-straight games, Providence scored a season-high two goals on the man advantage on Saturday, October 30 en route to a 3-2 victory over UMass at Schneider Arena.
FRIARS NAMED TEAM OF THE WEEK... The PC men's hockey squad was named Hockey East Team of the Week on November 1. The Friars posted a 1-0-1 record in a home-and-home series against the Minutemen over the weekend. In addition, Ian O'Connor and junior Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) were named to the Hockey East Weekly Honor Roll. On October 29, the Friars and the Minutemen played to a 3-3 overtime tie Amherst, Mass. Seniors Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.), O'Connor and Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) each scored for the Friars, who had a 3-2 lead with under four minutes remaining in the third period. O'Connor also added one assist, while Beaudry finished with 31 saves. The following night, the Friars defeated the Minutemen, 3-2, at Schneider Arena. O'Connor recorded one goal and one assist for the second consecutive game and MacKinnon also added one goal and one assist. Sophomore Aaron Jamnick (Hibbing, Minn.) also scored for the Friars who went two-for-four on the power play. Beaudry stopped 32 shots to earn his second win of the season.
MacKINNON LEADING THE TEAM IN SCORING... Kyle MacKinnon leads the Friars in scoring with five goals and is tied for the team lead with six points. Last season, MacKinnon didn't score his fifth goal until the 16th game and this season he has at least one goal in four of the seven games. In 34 games last season, MacKinnon finished tied for the team lead with 12 goals and led all Friars with 25 points.
