PLAYA DE CARMEN, MEXICO - The sophomore guard Vincent Council posted a career-high 29 points to lead the Providence College Friar men's basketball team over Wyoming, 84-77, on Wednesday, November 24 in the fourth round of the Cancun Challenge. The Friars posted a 3-1 mark in the Cancun Challenge and finished third in the Riviera Division.
The Friar big men, sophomore Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) and freshman Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.), got in early foul trouble but freshman Ron Giplaye (Lowell, Mass.) came off the bench to provide a spark for the Friars, scoring four points and grabbing five rebounds in 10 minutes of action. Council paced the offense with 10 points, while freshman Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) added nine points to help the Friars post a 35-31 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Friars opened up their lead thanks to the strong guard play of Council who recorded 19 points in the final 20 minutes. Part of Council's offensive explosion included a 16-16 performance from the free-throw line, which is one of the best all-time from a Friar. It is second only to Eric Murdock's 17-17 performance versus Seton Hall on January 2, 1991 (Murdock also posted a 16-16 performance). His 16 free throws also tied him for fifth all-time for most made in a single game by a Friar.
With 8:22 remaining in the game, Council made two free throws to give PC's its largest lead of the game at 67-52. Wyoming cut the lead to six points (70-64) with 4:20 remaining, but senior Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) drew a foul and made both free throws to get the lead back to eight points. The Cowboys were not able to get closer than six points over the remainder of the game. In addition to Council's 29 points, three other Friars scored in double figures. Coleman added 15 points, Brooks registered 10 points and sophomore Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) recorded 12 points, including a 4-6 performance from three-point territory.
Providence College will return to action at home on Monday, November 29 against Central Connecticut at 7 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
