Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Hartford, 75-53, in non-conference action on Saturday, November 20 at Reich Family Pavilion in West Hartford, Conn. It marked the third-straight victory for the Friars, as they improve to 3-1 on the year. Hartford drops to 0-3 with the loss.
Friar sophomore Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) led all scorers in the game with a career-high 18 points. She also hauled in eight rebounds and tallied two assists and two steals. Junior Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.) chipped in 14 points, while senior Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points.
The Friars raced out to a 16-2 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play, forcing Hartford to burn two, 30-second time outs early in the contest. Hartford hit just 1-of-17 shots during that span, while the Friars shot a blistering 67-percent from the field (8-12).
Hartford finally got back on the board out of the second media time out to make the score 16-4 at 11:24. Providence answered with a 8-0 run to take an 18-point lead (24-4) at the 7:40 mark of the first half. Hartford halted the run with a three-point bucket just 10-seconds later to make the score 24-7. Providence closed out the half with a 16-10 scoring advantage to take a 40-17 lead into halftime. The Friars dominated the glass in the opening 20 minutes, 31-10. Providence cooled off a bit down the stretch in the first half and went into halftime shooting 43.8-percent from the field (14-32). Hartford hit 6-of-27 attempts (22.2-percent).
Tate led the Friar offense with nine points in the first half, while Roberts tallied eight points and a team-best six rebounds. Daphne Elliott recorded five, first-half points for the Hawks.
The Hawks hit three-straight three-point buckets to open the first half, but the Friars were able to keep pace with a traditional three-point play by Roberts and a trey from Tate to keep a 20-point lead (46-26) at the first media time out.
With 10 minutes to play in the game, the Hawks proved they shook off the rust offensively, hitting 9-of-19 shots from the field, including 5-of-7 three pointers. However, the Friars still maintained a 20-point lead (60-40). Hartford outscored Providence, 36-35, in the second half.
Providence grabbed 50+ rebounds for the third-consecutive game, finishing the day with a 53-27 advantage on the boards. Twenty-five of the Friars' 53 boards came off of the offensive glass. Providence has pulled down 25+ offensive rebounds in each of its last two games.
Friar freshman Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) narrowly missed a double-double for the third-straight game after finishing the day with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Five Friars in all had six-or-more rebounds on the day. Roberts led the way on the offensive glass with five.
Ilicia Mathis led Hartford with 17 points. Ruthanne Doherty hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
The Friars return to action on Monday, November 22 against Hofstra University. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
