PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (2-0) knocked off Yale (0-2) 58-55 on Monday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Sophomore guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 18 points, fueled by a 9-of-11 performance from the free throw line.

There were nine ties and seven lead changes.

Trailing by one with 1:42 to go, the Friars got a big bucket from sophomore guard Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to take the lead. Mondy cut through the lane from the left baseline and willed a shot in from close range to give the Friars a 56-55 lead with 1:07 left in the game.

A defensive stop by the Friars, followed by a pair of free throws from senior Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) iced it giving PC a three point (58-55) lead with 19.1 seconds left. Brooks totaled 15 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.

Both teams had their chances in the first half and the Friars held a 29-21 advantage. PC shot a solid 43.5 percent from the field and held Yale to just 27.6 percent.

Providence held its largest lead of the game at 33-21 in the first minute of the second half.

Yale heated up offensively in the second frame registering five 3-pointers over the first six minutes. The teams had just five 3-pointers combined over the first 20 minutes, in fact, Yale hit just five 3-pointers in their first game of the season against Quinnipiac.

Yale led by as many as six 49-43 with 7:41 left in the second half, before Providence turned up the defensive intensity and held the Bulldogs scoreless while ripping off six straight to tie it 49-49 with 5:48 left in the game.

With the win, Providence has won its last 10 games against Ivy League schools.

Sophomore center Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds for his sixth career double-double.

PC shot 38.8 percent from the field, while Yale shot 33.3 percent. The Friars shot 18-of-29 (62.1 percent) from the line, while Yale was 8-of-13 (61.5 percent). In addition, the Friars were 2-of-14 from 3-point range, while Yale was 9-of-26. Providence also held a slight edge on the glass 39-36.

The Friars are in the midst of hectic start to the season playing four games in eight days. Providence returns to the Dunkin Donuts Center on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. against Morgan State. It was be the first contest of the Cancun Challenge.
