PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (3-0) knocked off Morgan State (1-1) 77-55 on Thursday night at the Dunkin' Dunuts Center.
Senior guard Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. He also grabbed 12 rebounds to notch his second-straight double-double. Brooks filled out the stat sheet with six assists, three blocks and two steals.
Sophomore guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 14 points and five assists, while freshman Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) scored 14 points and tallied eight rebounds.
The Providence defense also was impressive again holding its opponent to less than 60 points for the third straight game. It is the first time since 2004 that the Friars have held three-consecutive opponents to less than 60 points.
The last time PC held three-consecutive opponents to less than 60 points came Feb. 24, 2004. To begin that stretch, the Friars won at Boston College 61-52 on Feb. 14, beat Miami 70-57 on Feb. 21 and won at Notre Dame 73-59 on Feb 24.
Following an even start, the Friars turned up the defense midway through the first half holding Morgan State without a field goal for over seven minutes. Trailing 13-5 with 14:10 left in the first half, Providence went on a 13-0 run and held an 18-13 advantage with 7:06 left in the frame. Six different PC players scored during the stretch. The Friars later held a 29-25 lead at halftime.
Morgan State got back into the game in the second half and eventually tied it 42-42 with 10:21 left in the game. The Friars responded with a 13-4 run and held a nine-point lead, 55-46, with 7:20 left in regulation cruising the rest of the way.
Providence shot 39.4 percent from the field and held Morgan State to just 30.6 percent, including an 11.1 percent clip from beyond the arc. The Friars also held a 51-40 edge on the glass.
The Friars are in the midst of hectic start to the season playing four games in eight days. Providence returns to the Dunkin Donuts Center on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. against Prairie View A&M. PC heads to Cancun following the game and will take on La Salle on Nov. 23.
