PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (10-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) defeated Rutgers University (9-6, 0-3 BIG EAST) by a score of 94-81 Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had an incredible effort for PC, leading the team with 29 points and 20 rebounds. It marked the 32nd time in school history that a player has posted at least 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game and Peterson becomes only the seventh player in Friar history to accomplish the feat. The last time a Friar hit the mark was November 11, 2006 when Herbert Hill recorded 20 points and 20 rebounds against George Washington. It also marks only the 13th time in BIG EAST history that a player has eclipsed the mark.
The Friars took an early 12-3 lead and held a 16-9 advantage at the 14:20 mark of the first half. A 3-pointer by senior guard Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) moved PC ahead 21-12 and McKenzie connected on his third triple of the half to extend the lead to 13 at 28-15. With 6:06 to go in the half, sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continued the Friars 3-point barrage with a trey of his own, and junior guard/forward Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) quickly followed with a fast-break dunk to move the lead to 17 at 41-24. Another 3-pointer by Peterson marked the eighth-straight made field goal for PC and gave the team its largest lead of the half at 51-29 with 3:23 remaining in the stanza. Peterson capped his impressive half with a powerful dunk off a missed shot as time expired and the Friars entered intermission with a 55-38 lead.
The Friars played well on both sides of the floor in the half. The team shot 60.6 percent (20-33) from the field in the period and connected on 7-of-13 3-point attempts (53.8 percent). The Friars also made six steals and forced seven turnovers, leading to a 15-0 advantage in points off turnovers for PC. Peterson led the Friars with a first-half double-double, recording 24 points and 11 rebounds. Peterson's 24 points was a season high in a half for a PC player and marked the most points in a half by a Friar since Marshon Brooks recorded 24 first-half points against Sacred Heart on November 20, 2008.
The Scarlet Knights' Austin Johnson made a lay-up to cut the Friars' lead to 12 at 65-53 at the 13:44 mark of the second half but Rutgers could not move closer over the next five minutes and PC built the lead back to 16 at 75-59 with 8:26 remaining in the game. But Rutgers would not go away and the Scarlet Knights used a 7-0 run to move within nine at 77-68 with five minutes to play. The Friars responded with four-straight points to build the lead back to 13 at 81-68 and Rutgers could not get closer than seven for the remainder of the game.
Senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) added 21 points, four assists and three steals and Brooks posted 15 points and six rebounds for the Friars. PC never trailed in the game. The Friars hit the road for a two-game swing through the Midwest, beginning with a trip to Rosemont, Ill. to take on DePaul University on Thursday, January 14 at 9:00 p.m. at AllState Arena. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Providence wraps up the trip with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Marquette University on Sunday, January 17 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis. That game will air locally on Cox Sports 3 in Rhode Island.
