PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (9-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) was defeated by the University of Louisville (11-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) by a score of 92-70 on Wednesday, Jan. 6 in the Friars' BIG EAST home opener at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Cardinals used a 14-0 first-half surge and a 22-5 second-half run to put the game out of reach for PC. Junior guard/forward Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the Friars with 21 points while freshman forward/center Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) added 12 points and four rebounds.

The Cardinals connected on three of their first four 3-point attempts and raced to an early 9-0 lead. Louisville extended its shutout to 14-0 before the streak was broken with a lay-in by freshman guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.). A 3-pointer by Cardinals guard Mike Marra built the Louisville advantage to 19-5 at the 12:20 mark of the first half, but the Friars rallied back with an impressive 16-3 surge to pull within one at 22-21. Providence completed its sweeping first half comeback on a 3-pointer by sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as the Friars took their first lead at 26-25 with 6:09 to go in the stanza.

An acrobatic lay-up by freshman guard Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) moved the Friars ahead, 31-27, but the Cardinals rallied back to take a 32-31 lead. Soon after, Friar guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) connected on an improbable 3-point play and Providence surged ahead, 36-32. After trailing by as many as 14 in the period, the Friars entered intermission with a 42-37 lead.

Providence was unphased by its 0-for-9 start from the field, connecting on 15 of its next 20 attempts to finish the half with a 51.7 percent (15-29) mark. The Friars used a solid pressure defense to make six steals and force 11 Louisville turnovers. Brooks led PC with 12 first-half points on 4-of-4 shooting.

An electric dunk by Dixon off a good feed by Peterson kept the Friars ahead by five at 46-41 early in the second half. The Cardinals rallied to tie the game at 48, and used a 13-0 run over four minutes to take 16-point lead at 74-58 with 7:44 remaining in the contest.
