PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's basketball team (12-8, 4-4 BIG EAST) upset No. 19/19 Connecticut (13-7, 3-4 BIG EAST) by a score of 81-66 on Wednesday, Jan. 27 before a raucous crowd of 11,136 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friars used an 18-1 surge with nine minutes to play in the game to effectively put the contest out-of-reach in the second half. PC earned its first win over a ranked team since the 81-73 victory over No. 1/1 Pittsburgh on Feb. 24, 2009. The win also marks the Friars' fourth win in the last five tries against the Huskies.
Sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars with his 11th double-double and ninth 20-point output of the season, posting 23 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Friar offense. His 11 double-doubles is tied for first in the BIG EAST with Notre Dame's Luke Harangody. Senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) added 18 points for PC, including a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
Connecticut opened the game with a bang, outscoring the Friars 14-5 behind eight early points from Jerome Dyson. The Friars responded with five-straight points to cut the Huskies' lead to five, but UConn used strong inside play by Gavin Edwards to extend the lead to 10 at 22-12 with 10:26 to go in the first half. A deep 3-pointer by freshman guard Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) moved PC back within seven at 29-22 and another 3-pointer from downtown Providence by junior guard/forward Marshon Brooks cut the UConn lead to two (29-27). An electric dunk by Peterson tied the score at 31 at the 3:43 mark and capped a 12-2 run by the Friars. Off a great pass from freshman guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.), freshman forward/center Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) finished a difficult lay-in, and the Friars had their first lead of the contest with a 36-35 edge entering intermission.
Despite only shooting 33.3 percent (14-of-42) in the half, the Friars utilized an effective pressure defense, making eight steals and forcing 13 UConn turnovers to enter the half with the lead. Peterson led PC with 12 first-half points while Mondy provided a spark off the bench with eight points, including two 3-pointers.
With the Friars c linging to a 3-point lead, senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) hit a difficult jump shot to give PC a 45-40 advantage four minutes into the second half. After the Friars extended the lead to as many as seven (51-44), a steal and finish by Kemba Walker moved UConn back within two at 51-49.
Peterson moved the Friars back ahead by five (55-50) on another jam off a missed shot, but Connecticut responded with eight-straight points to regain the lead at 58-55 with 9:32 to play. The Friars answered back with a dominant 18-1 run of their own over the next 6:54 to take a 73-59-point lead, highlighted by effective penetration by Vincent Council (four assists during the stretch) that led to a bevy of free throws and lay-ins by Providence. The run was capped by a massive dunk by Dixon off another good feed from Council. The Friars took their largest lead of the game at 18 (81-63) on free throws by Curry with 1:07 to play.
Council played an excellent game from the point for PC, posting a career-high eight assists to go along with eight points, seven rebounds and four steals. Bilal Dixon anchored the Friars around the basket, recording his second-career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. since the Dec. 9 game at George Washington.
The Friars shot a much improved 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from the field in the second half and made their free throws down the stretch, as Curry connected on 8-of-8 attempts in the final two minutes. After being outscored 18-16 by UConn in the paint in the first half, PC turned the tables in the final stanza, with 28 points down low to the Huskies' 14. The Friars also held a 21-12 edge in second chance points for the game.
The Friars hit the road for a two-game swing, beginning with a trip to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 6:00 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU. From there, PC will travel to Central New York for a matchup with No. 4 Syracuse on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. That contest will be televised locally on Cox Sports 3 in Rhode Island.
