BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), 3-1, on Wednesday, September 30 at the Genovesi Center in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. With the win, Providence improves to 9-12 on the season, while St. Francis falls to 1-10.
St. Francis came out strong in opening set and earned a 25-22 victory in the stanza. Providence responded by taking the next three sets, 25-22, 28-26 and 25-22, to earn the match victory.
Sophomore Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) played a strong all-around match for the Friars. Morrison tied a career-high with 45 assists, notched eight digs and six kills and hit at a .500 clip. The 5-9 setter also posted 45 assists in PC's 3-1 win over Bucknell on September 6.
At the net, sophomore Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) paced the Friars with 17 kills and added four total blocks, including two solo. Outside hitters senior Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) and sophomore Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) contributed 14 kills and 11 kills, respectively. For the Friars, it marked the first time this season that three student-athletes posted double-digit kills in a match.
Junior Sondra Snyder (Norwood, N.J.) registered 12 digs to lead PC defensively.
Providence enjoyed a 58-to-56 advantage in digs for the match and posted eight total blocks to the Terriers four. The Friar service game continued to shine, as Morrison also contributed three service aces and junior defensive specialist Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif) led the team with four.
Detelina Dimitrova paced the Terriers with 19 kills and setter Maria Kashavelova posted a match-high 51 assists.
Next up for the Friars, Providence returns to Mullaney Gymnasium for the team's home final on Wednesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. against intra-state rival Bryant. Prior to the match, senior Abby Majewski will be honored for her contributions to the Friar Volleyball program.
