Volleyball Splits Final Two Matches Of Friar Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College volleyball team (8-12) defeated Coppin State, 3-0, and fell to tournament champion New Hampshire, 3-0, at the final day of the Sixth Annual Friar Classic on Saturday, September 29 in Providence, R.I. The Friars finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, good for second place. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with 20 kills over the two matches.

In the match against Coppin State, Providence won in straight sets, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-16. Fletcher posted 12 kills and two service aces to pace the Friar offense against the Eagles. Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) fueled the Providence attack with 28 assists while freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) notched eight digs to pace the team defensively.

The Friars enjoyed a 37-to-25 advantage in kills for the match and notched an impressive 12 service aces to the Eagles' four. Freshman defensive specialist Shelby Spicer (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the PC service game with a match-high four service aces.

Kanishia Sheppard led Coppin State with eight kills and Mercedes Maynard-Randall notched 15 assists for the Eagles.

In the Friar Classic championship match against New Hampshire, the Friars were defeated in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-21. Fletcher paced Providence in the match with eight kills and two solo blocks. Morrison played a solid all-around match against the Wildcats, posting 20 assists and a team-high nine digs.

The Wildcats won the match in large part to a 42-to-28 advantage in kills. Lindsay Fogarty and Lauren Laquerre led UNH with 12 kills each and Tournament MVP Kate Uitti posted a match-high 39 assists to help propel the team to victory.

For Providence, senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.), Fletcher and Morrison earned Friar Classic All-Tournament honors. New Hampshire won the tournament with a 3-0 record. The Friars placed second at 2-1, while St. Francis (N.Y.) finished third (1-2) and Coppin State was fourth (0-3).

Next up for PC, the Friars will travel to Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. for a rematch against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m.
