WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence College volleyball team defeated Holy Cross, 3-2, on Wednesday, September 2 at the Holy Cross Field House in Worcester, Mass. The Friars won the match with set scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-14, 19-25 and 15-9. Providence improves to 2-2 on the season, while the Crusaders fall to 0-1.
Senior Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) led the Providence offense with a career-high 17 kills and now ranks first on the team with 38 kills in 2009. Sophomore Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted a superb all-around effort for the Friars, notching eight kills and a personal-best nine total blocks, including four solo stops. Fletcher also set a career high with three service aces against the Crusaders.
Freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) registered a personal-best 20 digs to lead the Friar defense, while sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) recorded 31 assists and career bests of nine digs and four service aces.
The Friars owned a sizable advantage in blocks, outperforming Holy Cross, 21-to-4. PC also held a 14-to-10 advantage in service aces.
Kathleen Colpoys led the Crusaders with 13 kills and setter Chelsey O'Donnell recorded 38 assists. Angela Chisholm notched 22 digs for Holy Cross.
Providence will continue its season-opening road trip this weekend at the Volley in the Valley Tournament, hosted by Marist University in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. On Saturday, September 5 the Friars will face Bryant at 10:00 a.m. and Marist at 7:00 p.m. PC plays an 11:00 a.m. contest against Bucknell on Sunday, September 6 at 11:00 a.m.
