POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team (2-4) fell to Bryant University, 3-2, and Marist College, 3-0, on Saturday, September 5, at the Volley in the Valley Tournament in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) paced the Friars with 21 kills over the two matches.
Against Bryant, the Friars were defeated, 3-2, in a closely fought contest. After the Friars won the first set, 25-23, Bryant won the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-18. Providence rallied back to earn a 25-20 victory in the fourth set and force a deciding fifth stanza. In the fifth set, Bryant won, 15-8, to claim the match victory.
Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) recorded her first career double-double, posting 29 assists and a personal-best 14 digs against the Bulldogs. Morrison leads PC with 153 assists on the year. Fletcher paced the Friar offense, recording 10 kills in the match. She also led Providence with six total blocks. Freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) recorded a career-high 29 digs to pace the Friar defense.
Bryant won the match largely in part to a 64-to-44 advantage in kills. Maria Scocca notched 29 kills for the Bulldogs while Jazmin Stoner added 12. Julie Geonnotti posted a double-double with 21 assists and 11 digs for Bryant.
Next up for the Friars was Marist. The Red Foxes defeated the Friars in straight sets, 25-18, 25-13 and 25-16.
Fletcher posted 11 kills against Marist and senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) added four kills to lead the Friar offense. Morrison recorded 18 assists and a match-high three service aces.
Alexandra Schultze led Marist with 11 kills.
Providence will remain in Poughkeepsie to face off against Bucknell on Sunday, September 6 at 11:00 a.m. in the final day of the Volley in the Valley.
