PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team surrendered two late goals at the end of each half in a 3-2 loss to Northeastern on September 16 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Providence, which boasts the third-toughest schedule in the nation, drops to 2-3 on the season. Northeastern improves to 4-2 with the victory.
In the first half, the two teams were knotted in a scoreless tie until Northeastern cracked the scoring column with just one-second remaining on the clock. Crystal Poland carried the ball down the right side of the field and sent a crossing pass into the circle. Nicola Graham was the beneficiary of the pass, as she deflected the ball into the cage for her second goal of the season. Poland was credited with the assist on the play. Northeastern outshot Providence, 7-3, in the opening half. Four of the Huskies' shots came in the first seven minutes of play before the Friar defense settled.
In the second half, the Friars came out strong and tied the score, 1-1, in the 41st minute of play as senior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Freshman Nicole Fernandez (Tewksbury, Mass.) was credited with the assist after carrying the ball on the left baseline and sending a crossing pass in front of the cage to Poulin.
Northeastern countered to pull back ahead, 2-1, as Pam Aldridge scored on a penalty corner play assisted by Kaela Barker at 43:26.
At the 51:24 mark, Providence knotted the score at 2-2 as junior Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) scored on a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle. Hudson's shot found the lower left side of the cage.
It was Northeastern, however, who would tally another late goal as time wound down in the half. With just 23-second remaining on the clock, Barker scored the game-winner on a penalty corner play assisted by Aldridge.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded four saves in the cage for Providence. Northeastern's Lizzie Priest also recorded four saves.
The Friars outshot the Huskies, 8-6, in the second half. Northeastern held a 13-11 advantage in shots for the game, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Northeastern also held a slim advantage in penalty corners, 7-6.
Providence returns to action this weekend with back-to-back games against two top-10 teams in Connecticut and Princeton. The Friars host No. 6 UConn in the 2009 BIG EAST opener for both squads on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, September 20, Providence will host No. 4 Princeton at 1:00 p.m.
