Volleyball Drops Final Two Matches Of Crosstown Tournament

EASTON, PA. - The Providence College volleyball team (4-8) fell to Lafayette, 3-2, and Niagara, 3-0, on Saturday, September 12 in the Lafayette-hosted leg of the Lafayette/Lehigh Crosstown Tournament in Easton, Pa. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with 26 kills over the two matches.

PC opened strong against Lafayette, winning the first set, 25-22. After the Leopards won the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-17, the Friars took the fourth set, 25-22, to force a fifth and deciding stanza. In the fifth set, PC lost, 15-6.

Sophomore middle blockers Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) led the Friar offense with 18 kills and 11 kills, respectively. Fletcher also added three solo blocks to pace PC at the net. Sophomore setter Carly Morrison added her fourth double-double of the season with 33 assists and 12 digs.

Lafayette held a 66-to-43 advantage in kills and an eight-to-four advantage in service aces.

Against Niagara, Providence was defeated in straight sets, 12-25, 20-25 and 15-25. Fletcher notched eight kills and freshman defensive specialist Shelby Spicer (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) added six digs and a service ace for PC. The Purple Eagles won the match largely in part to a 47-to-17 advantage in kills.

The Friars finished the tournament with a 1-3 record.

PC returns home for a 6:00 p.m. matchup on Tuesday, September 15 against Dartmouth at Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall. Admission is free.
