Field Hockey Blanks Dartmouth, 4-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team posted a 4-0 victory against non-conference foe Dartmouth on September 11 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Four different Friars recorded goals on the night, including junior Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) who paced the Friars with three points (1 goal/1 assist). Senior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) earned her first shutout of the season, and 18th of her career, on three saves.

In the first half, the Friars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of play. Senior defender Kerianne Murphy (Walpole, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal to get things started at the 12:36 mark. She carried the ball into the circle and found the back of the cage, unassisted, with a hard shot from the right side. At the 14:52 mark, senior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) notched her fifth goal of the season to give the Friars a 2-0 advantage. Poulin collected a pass from junior Ruggieri at the right post and beat the Dartmouth goalkeeper.

The Friars added another two scores in the second half to make the final, 4-0. Senior Ali Shover (Camp Hill, Pa.) struck at 56:04 as she dribbled into the circle and beat the keeper, unassisted. Ruggieri rounded out the scoring at 65:47 as she beat a pack of defenders into the circle and slipped it into the cage.

Providence outshot the Big Green, 24-7, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 5-1.

Providence returns to action on Wednesday, September 16 against non-conference foe Northeastern. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. and will begin at 7:00 p.m.
