NIAGARA, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team (1-2) earned its first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Coppin State University (0-3) on Sunday, August 30 at the Niagara Invitational in Niagara, N.Y. The Friars defeated the Eagles with set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-23.

Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) paced the Friars with 11 kills. Senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) added 10 kills for PC while sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) posted seven. Setting up the offense was sophomore Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), who notched a career-high 35 assists. Freshman defensive specialist Cassandra Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) recorded 14 digs to lead the Friars defensively, while freshman defensive specialist Shelby Spicer (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) added 10 digs and posted two service aces.

Ashley Saunders led Coppin State with seven kills while Tyler Phillips posted 11 digs for the Eagles.

Niagara won the tournament with a 3-0 record over the weekend. Hartford placed second, while the Friars finished third and Coppin State came in fourth.

Next up for PC, the Friars return to New England for a match against Holy Cross on Wednesday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
