Providence Men's Track Competes at Penn Relays

PHILIDELPHIA, Penn. - April 23-25 marked the 115th running of the Penn Relays held at Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania. Under sunny skys and warm temperatures, the men's team posted impressive performances. The Friars took home a bronze medal in the 4 x Mile relay and a fourth place finish in the distance medley relay.
Thursday night featured the individual distance events, where the Friars had two athletes compete. Junior Tom Webb (Williston, Vermont) placed second in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time of 14:22.56. Sophomore Nicholas Barao also ran a personal-best in the 5,000 meters, crossing the line in a time of 14:55.01.
On Friday, the men's distance medley team comprised of junior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand), sophomore Thomas Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.), senior Charles Dewey (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland), placed fourth in the Championship of America race with a time of 9:37.76. Villanova won the event in a winning time of 9:30.81.
Saturday, the final day of competition, Providence competed in the men's 4 x Mile Championship of America. The team was comprised of senior Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland), David McCarthy, freshman Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) and Hayden McLaren. The men placed third-overall with a time of 16:22.95. Arkansas won the event in a time of 16:16.11.
The next meet for the Friars will be the BIG EAST Championships held at the University of Villanova on May 1-3, 2009.
