The Providence College swimming & diving teams traveled to Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Saturday, February 8 to compete at the New England Invitational. Although no team scores were tallied, freshman John Evans (Chester, Va.) excelled on the day, earning a BIG EAST Championship qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley. Evans finished the event in 2:00.07.
Juniors Mike Loftis (Branford, Conn.) and Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.) had strong finishes for the Friars. Loftis earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.23. Card finished third in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.83. The pair then teamed with classmates Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Owen Hughes (Portland, Maine) to take second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing in a time of 1:31.30.
For the women, senior Blair Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) earned two third-place finishes on the day. Flynn finished the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:04.20 and the 100-yard freestyle in 56.67. Freshman Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.) also had a third-place finish coming in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.69.
The Friars will travel to the BIG EAST Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. February 18 through February 21.
